Population Health provides a free and voluntary health screening service for Waikato refugee family
reunifi cation immigrants and asylum seekers. Screening includes a full health screen by GP, dental
check and urgent dental treatment, professional interpreters, blood tests, hospital chest x-ray, urine
and faeces tests, urgent health treatment and referrals to specialists or other services. Free screening
is available to asylum seekers who have applied for refugee status in the past six months and
refugee family reunifi cation immigrants who have arrived in New Zealand in the past six months.

• District Nursing and Community Allied Health provide services to patients of all ages in their community
setting. A GP/Doctor must make referrals for these services.

• Vision Hearing Technicians provides screening for children at designated ages in schools and preschools (25

• The Ear Nurse Service provides assessment and treatment services for children. These nurses work from

The Migrant Internship Programme offers migrants with open work permits or permanent residency skilled
work experience in their area of expertise and qualifi cations. Both employer and intern are supported during
the 6 week period to address any issues that may arise. These may be around language, culture, gaps in
industry knowledge and areas requiring further training. At the end of the internship the client leaves with
a greater insight into the New Zealand workplace culture, relevant work experience, a reference and a new
network. The internships can be paid or voluntary, full or part time. If necessary, migrants will be referred on to
relevant organisations to provide further training or up skilling to improve possibilities of gaining employment
in the New Zealand job market. Group sessions are also offered educating on areas that will assist in preparing
for and settlement in a New Zealand workplace.
