Court Music / Yeongsanhoesang

Yeongsanhoesang is originally derived from Buddhist vocal music. The music is distinguished by its elegant, graceful and profound tones representing traditional Korean court music. “Yeongsanhoesang” enjoyed by scholars and aristocrats of the Joseon dynasty for self-cultivation. The tempo is general is slow and the music is emotionally restrained with reminiscent of zen aesthetics.

 

 

Traditional Folk Music / Gayageum Sanjo of Kim Byung-ho School

Sanjo is a solo instrumental music originated from sinawi, the shaman music of southwestern Korea. It begins with slow tempo and accelerates as the music progresses and usually consists of several rhythmic patterns that function as separated sections : Jinyang (slow) - Jungmori (moderate) - Jungjungmori (moderate fast) - Jajinmori (fast) - Hwimori (extremely fast) or Danmori. The melody of sanjo is based on Various scale patterns. The tones, mood, and playing methods may differ in accordance with the scale.

 

The right hand plucks and picks the strings, while the left hand shakes, push and lift the strings. Subtle melodic decorations and microtonal shadings, produced by various hand techniques, express the dynamic of sanjo. The sanjo music express various emotional feelings and musical world through the changes in melodies and rhythms. When the music reaches the climax toward the end of the music, the gayageum player may exhibit brilliant mastery techniques.

 

It take about forty to sixty minutes to play the entire melody of sanjo.

However, it can be abridged to about ten minutes for special occasions.

Sanjo is accompanied by the hourglass drum, janggu which plays endless rhythmic variations. More than ten schools of gayaageum sanjo style have been transmitted until today.

 

 

Modern Composition / Chimhyang-moo (Dance in the Perfume of Aloes) composed by Hwang Byung-ki

Chimhyang – moo (1974) breaks entirely new ground in the field of Korean music. Chimhyang, an Indian perfume, gives its name to the work (Dance in the Perfume of Aloes). In the work, Hwang surveys the world of Buddhist art in the Silla period, where sensitivity to beauty was sublimated into religious exultation by the medium of music. Completely new techniques in performance are required for this work. Even the tuning is different, the basis being a scale used for a Buddhist chant. Arpeggios are employed which recall those of the ancient East Asian harp, the Konghu.

of Korean Gayageum Player

Seung-hee BAEK

 

Seung-hee BAEK is representative gayageum player who continue to carry the tradition of Korean performing arts – music and dance as well as contemporary avant-garde.

She began to learn Korean traditional performing arts at 10. Her musical experience of Korean traditional arts with Korean traditional teaching method from the young age made her perform the most traditional music. She graduated from Gukak National Middle and High school. She earnd  both the BA and MA in gayageum performance from Seoul National University. And she is doctorate students at SNU College of Music.

Since her professioal debut, she has performed numerous solo recitals in Korea, the U.S., Germany, Belgium, Ghana etc.

In the Year of 2014, she was awarded “The First Prize” by the Ministry of culture and Tourism.
