Hamilton central city business owners are reporting fewer instances of anti-social behaviour in the city since the Council’s City Safety Officers were introduced last year.

Dressed in highly visible uniforms, the City Safety Officers work closely with the Council’s CCTV operators to discourage anti-social and criminal activity in the city and offer assistance to anyone who feels unsafe or is at risk.

City Safe Unit Manager, Kelvin Powell, says the City Safety Officers are making a positive difference to the perception of safety in the CBD.

“Members of the public say they feel safer while in the central city, and there’s definitely a visible reduction in the amount of people begging and sleeping rough.”

The mere presence of the City Safety Officers has increased the perception of safety for visitors and workers in the central city, says Hamilton Central Business Association General Manager, Sandy Turner.

Working in partnership with the Hamilton Central Business Association and organisations, such as the People’s Project, the City Safety Officers are able to identify issues and find positive solutions for people.

People’s Project lead Julie Nelson praises the team's professionalism and ability to communicate with the public.

“I've seen their ability to calm situations that may have resulted in police involvement.  The City Safe team's early intervention prevents problems occurring.”
